Teacher's Pet
One of the blessings of homeschooling is that the world is your classroom. There is no
denying the fact that the best lessons are those that are engaging of the senses and have a practical application.
As a farm family we've decided to be purposeful, researching all aspects of topics in order be as well informed as possible....and to farm in a sustainable way keeping in mind our family vision as being a "place to grow our best". For us, this is more than a business....this is our life. A piece of that is using our lives as an example.
Our homeschool co-op has been studying life cycles this month. It was a perfect opportunity for our kids to share about our chickens.....and not just the anatomy, life cycle and care of the birds....but also to share why we have chosen to raise Heritage Delaware Chickens as our laying flock and our future plans to help increase the numbers of this versatile breed as it is in danger of becoming extinct. As the kids doted over "Jessica"- our favored hen, the conversation became not only about care of the birds, but also the deeper meaning of our path as a farm and the choices we make.
As an educator that has taught in the public school system- and now as a homeschooling parent, I have always been energized when the kids would "get it"! Listening to our eldest in particular share about the New Hampshire Red breed he's chosen to raise as his own flock this year, his future plans for his birds and the pride he felt about being the expert in the room- I had a moment of..."Yeah, he gets it".
Thank you Jessica- for being the teacher's pet this week and helping us to learn more deeply to care for God's creatures.....not just the "how" of doing so, but the "why" as well.
